How can some people who are so intelligent still be religious fanatics?

I was listening to the radio not long ago and I happened to stop on a talk show that advertised itself as a place for Intelligent religious conversation. the host appeared to be very intellectual and convincing except for the fact that he kept mentioning the divine powers of the almighty... I'm not trying to start a whole religious debate. I'm simply trying to understand how someone who appears to be so in tune with logic could preach so strongly about something that has no real bearing in reality. I think he was an evangelical scholar or something like that now that I think about it. anyway don't reply with any hate because I'm not hating. Just curious.
