Why do people get pets for presents?

There is nothing wrong with getting a pet on Christmas Day or anything other holiday. Have you tried it? What happened if you did? I got a dog for Christmas and it was the greatest gift my family has ever gotten, they played with him for hrs and later in the afternoon we opened the gifts and the puppy was having a blast in the paper. You need help!
