About how much does a cooling system pressure test cost?

My bf wants a cooling system pressure tester kit, but from other research I've done I don't think it would worth the $100 (the average price I've seen), if he can get it done at a garage for cheaper. He usually works on his own car but my understanding is that kit doesn't get used much. Which would be the better option, buying the kit or taking it to the shop?
