Ethanol fuel in Brazil?

I have concerns about using crops to make fuels. It sounds neat, but it often leads to big farms, un-rotated crops that abuses the land, and then lots of fertilizer gets used, which for the same set up in Australia where the sugar cane industry is destroying the Great Barrier Reef because of all the fertilizer runs off into the ocean, it promotes the algae that kills the coral.
